How to get a job as a web3 community manager

As a web3 community manager, you'll be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with members of decentralized online communities. This often involves coordinating events, facilitating discussions, providing customer support and promoting the adoption of web3 technologies. It's a challenging but rewarding role that requires excellent communication skills, a passion for technology, and often a strong understanding of blockchain technology.

If you're interested in pursuing a career as a web3 community manager, here are some tips to help you get started.

Build your knowledge of web3 technologies

Web3 technologies, such as blockchain and decentralized finance (DeFi), are complex and constantly evolving. To succeed as a web3 community manager, you'll need to understand these technologies and how they work. This means keeping up to date with industry news (E.g. Milk Road & Coindesk) and developments, participating in online communities, and learning from experienced professionals. You will find great resources from nonprofit organizations such as The Web3 Foundation.

Tools for web3 community managers

The best community managers leverage software to understand, support and drive community engagement. It can be easy to spend all of your time managing multiple social platforms (Twitter, Discord, Telegram etc.) and answering repetitive questions.

Customer Support

On the customer support front, software such as Mava helps consolidate all customer support tickets into one place. You can then automatically respond to users and keep everything organized in the Mava dashboard. This makes omnichannel community management much more straightforward and allows you to track key customer support metrics over time with Mava's powerful analytics dashboard.

To improve community engagement, you could use activation tools such as Crew3

In order to know how healthy the community is and whether it’s trending in the right direction, you’ll need to keep track of some core metrics like engagement and activation rates. Moreover, you probably want to get some insights into what type of users your community is made up of. Tools such as  Comoon and w3w can help with this.

Having an awareness of tools to help you support and scale a community is key. If you want to get more insights into what tools are available, check out our post on CRM, analytics and support tools for web3.

Develop your communication skills

As a web3 community manager, you'll need to be able to effectively communicate technical concepts to a diverse audience, as well as facilitate discussions and resolve conflicts within the community. Therefore, developing your communication skills is key. To develop your communication skills, consider taking online courses, joining a public speaking group, or volunteering as a moderator in online communities. A large number of web3 communities, such as GitCoin, Acala and nftfi, offer 'Ambassador' programs where you can volunteer to help out and build experience.

Network and build relationships

Networking and building relationships within the web3 community is crucial to finding job opportunities as a web3 community manager.

The first way to make connections is by attending IRL events. While not web3-focused, many event organizers in web3 host their events on Eventbrite. Simply pick your location and search for keywords such as crypto or web3. Another platform to check out web3 events is Degen Events.

You could also attend one of the large web3 conferences such as ETH Denver or Token 2049.

In addition to events, you can join online communities and networks. A good network to join if you’re a budding (or professional) community manager is  the WGMI community, which is made up of community professionals. Their Discord also hosts a job board to find new opportunities.

Create a portfolio of your work & your personal brand

Having a portfolio of your work can help demonstrate your skills and experience as a web3 community manage. Consider creating a website or online platform where you can showcase your work, such as event planning, social media campaigns, or community engagement initiatives. You can also include any writing or content creation you've done related to web3 technologies, such as blog posts or articles.

To display your writing to a wider audience in web3, consider joining PubDAO who are looking to redefine publication creation and distribution, and are always looking for talented writers.

Alternatively, you could also use YouTube, Twitter or Lenster to help demonstrate your personal following or industry insights.

Look for job openings and apply

Once you've built your knowledge, skills, and relationships in the web3 community, it's time to start looking for job openings. There are many websites and platforms where you can find job openings for web3 community manager roles, such as, Crypto Jobs List or traditional platforms like Wellfound (formerly AngelList). Be sure to tailor your resume and cover letter (if applicable) to the specific job you're applying for, highlighting your relevant skills and experience.

Lots of web3 community managers land jobs just by networking and asking round in lots of Discord communities, perseverance is essential so don’t despair if you don’t land a job straight away!

Consider freelancing or starting your own business

If you're having trouble finding a full-time position as a web3 community manager, consider freelancing or starting your own business. This can be a great way to build experience and make connections in the industry, and it also gives you the flexibility to choose the projects and clients you want to work with. Several agencies provide community support for projects, such as Defiants, and they are often looking for high-quality community managers to join their network.

In summary, becoming a web3 community manager requires a strong understanding of web3 technologies, a solid understanding of customer support tools (e.g. Mava), excellent communication skills, and a passion for building and maintaining relationships within decentralized communities. By building your knowledge, developing your skills, and networking within the industry, you can increase your chances of finding a job in this exciting and rapidly growing field.
